PAGE 12 SUPERHUMAN ROWER’S NEW CHALLENGE THE ROCK RALLIES ROUND TO SAVE 3 KINGS! IT’S a Christmas story to warm the heart as Gi- braltar has again shown its true community spirit and saved one of itsmost treasured traditions. The Gibraltar fam- ily has positively rallied around the call to rescue the under-threat Three Kings Cavalcade, the much-loved parade that has celebrated the first event of The Rock’s social calendar for the past 60 years. In fact people on the Rock have not only res- cued it but have ensured that this year’s is one of the best ever! Despite the thousands of spectators that lined Main Street every year, the number of floats in- volved was falling away as fewer took part in the actual procession – and last year’s number was a sorry low. Despite the heroic ef- forts over many years by the Three Kings Cav- alcade committee, last year’s parade of just eight mobile floats was starting to look like the start of the end for a proud tradition. But Gibraltar rarely gives up so easily. The Committee, ably led by Eric Abudharam, kicked into overdrive calling on the Government, public services and private en- terprises to get behind the cause offering cash incen- tives to those entering, improved awards for prize winners and much needed covered access for float building. Political heavyweights including the Chief Min- ister Fabian Picardo have thrown their support be- hind the 2018 Cavalcade and to date the Com- mittee have been able to boast almost DOUBLE the number of entries to last year with many more interested parties looking to become involved. They are all determined to ensure that this 61stAn- niversary parade will be a truly memorable event and not the latest setback for a once grand pageant. A huge pat on the back is due to the hard-work- ing Committee and to all those that responded to ensure that on Thursday January 5 an enthusiastic local community will en- joy another superb spec- tacle to welcome in the New Year.
