He confirmed that he held Sir Peter in the high- est esteem despite the fact that they were not always in agreement. However, Sir Peter’s decision puts outgoing leader Daniel Feetham in an awkward position when it comes to his own endorsement. GSD leadership candi- date Roy Clinton has called on the member- ship to vote with their conscience after party grandee Sir Peter Ca- ruana publicly endorsed Clinton’s opponent Keith Azopardi for the job. In a surprisingly forth- right response to Carua- na’s decision, Mr Clinton said that while he re- spects his right to make his opinion public he deeply regrets that Sir Pe- ter felt unable to remain impartial at this time. But to endorse Keith Azopardi presents its own problems. He and Mr Feetham haven’t ex- actly been close in the past, with Mr Azopardi resigning from the GSD when it merged with Mr Feetham’s Labour Party. Mr Clinton seems un- moved by whoever the for- mer leaders choose to sup- port. He said: “I have not sought the endorsement of any former GSD ‘heavy- weight’ since I strongly believe that any candidate should be able to stand on their own merits alone. “It is of course a matter of deep regret to me that Sir Peter has been unable to remain impartial dur- ing the leadership elec- tion process but I respect his decision to make his personal views public.  “I trust that the GSD Ex- ecutive and Membership will vote according to their conscience and consider the exciting manifesto that I of- fer the party for renewal.” Sir Peter Caruana Keith Azopardi Daniel Feetham
