A MAGNIFICENT performance by Gibraltar’s national men’s hockey team saw them take gold, topping the table and remaining unbeaten in all four of their matches at the Eurohockey Championships in Slovenia.
The first match against Slovenia became a one-sided affair with Gibraltar running in seven goals with just two replies from the Slovenia side. Karl Lima who had an outstanding game, scored a hat-trick.
If the first game against the hosts could be described as comfortable this game against the Finland was achieved at a canter with Gibraltar winning 8-0.
The match was played mid afternoon in warm temperatures more suited to Gibraltar. Gibraltar took control of the game from the first quarter and in the end ran out easy winners with Kayron Stago snatching a hat trick.
Gibraltar 5 – Hungary 2
After two games and two victories apiece, Gibraltar and Hungary were tied at the top of the table with six points each with the next game between them likely to be the group decider.
This match was always going to be the toughest challenge of the event and so it proved but the team from The Rock ran out worthy winners overcoming the Hungarians 5-2.
Gibraltar showed Cyprus no mercy in their final match, finishing comfortable 12-0 winners.
This on paper was always going to be the easiest of the matches but it still had to be won which the Gibraltar side achieved in terrific style.
Ian Rodriguez was recognised as the best player of the competition and also the top goal scorer alongside Julian Lopez.
Head coach Christian Zammit said that the team had prepared well for the event and all that pre tournament hard work had paid off on the pitch,.
He said: “I am proud of what we have achieved, and in the manner we have achieved it. All 18 players deserve full credit for what has been a fantastic tournament”.
