GROWING concerns of escalating violence toward police officers in the Campo area have led to both the Policia Nacional and Guardia Civil reinforcing their presence in and around La Linea.
The move to beef up law enforcement personnel including rapid response units comes after a number of incidents where criminal gangs have resorted to violence to avoid arrest or to intimidate the police or rivals
In one incident a desperate criminal gang caught out by a joint operation by Gibraltar and Spanish law enforcement agencies at sea fired two shots at a Gibraltar Police vessel from the RHIB in which they were travelling causing the chase to be abandoned.
The Royal Gibraltar Police described the event as a ‘tipping point’.
There have been recent reports of two shootings between rival gangs in La Linea and two handguns discovered after a successful drugs raid conducted by the Guardia Civil.
However, the increase in numbers of enforcement officers in the Campo area drew a contemptuous response from the Spanish police union Sindicato Unificado de Policía describing the move as “temporary and insufficient” and calling for a permanent increase in numbers to include specialist officers.
