GIBRALTAR Premier League champions Europa FC took a major scalp in their Champions League debut qualifier in Wales, winning 2-1 against the Welsh Premier League champions The New Saints.
The Welsh side were strongly fancied to be too strong for the Gibraltar outfit in the first leg of the first round tie but Europa were one up inside eight minutes as Alex Quillo became his club's first scorer in the competition from a Kike Gómez cross.
Scott Quigley equalised for the Welsh champions just before half-time when he flicked the ball on before lashing home a brilliant shot over goalkeeper Javi Munoz.
There were just 12 minutes of this keenly fought contest left when Europa snatched the vital lead through Gomez, who curled home a beauty following a fine run down the right by Liam Walker.
The victory could have been all the more decisive if a shot had not cannoned back off the Saints bar in the closing minutes.
The second leg of the round will be played at Faro in Portugal on July 4. The winners will face Croatian side HNK Rijeka in the second qualifying round of the competition.
